A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
