European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
